I know there are 3rd party services that will back it up but it seems like there should be a simpler, more economical way to achieve long term storage. For example, their current BDR policy requires that they would like a "snapshot" of their data saved locally every month, quarter and year-end.
This data is then saved for three years. They have just under a terabyte of data. With the added APIs that exist there are many projects out there that do this for free or nearly free now. Super simple and works well for local backup and restore of your Google Cloud Data. This computer would connect to my LAN and perform scheduled backups on three or four servers mounted drives. The backups would only be of files and not the servers system states or databases.
Drive File Stream recently received compatibility with Windows Server. Perhaps they could script their backups to run on a local server, pulling them directly via File Stream. Otherwise, a local script in their preferred language Python, Java, JS, etc. During the testing phase, they found that they can't simply use a mapped drive as the target backup location.
A script might work. Has anyone seen anything like that available? If we can get a copy of their data refreshed at the required backup interval, they could continue to use the archive system they have in place.
Unfortunately I don't have an answer, as we ran into the Mapped Drive limitation of backup and sync as well.
Have you tried using robocopy? Assuming you're in a Windows environment. I use it in my backup scripts for more selective local backups. Never tried it with File Stream though. It has a myriad of options to fine tune it's behavior. I just ran a test with robocopy on a My Drive sub-folder in Drive File Stream on my Windows 10 machine and it was successful. I basically ran this command:. It worked, both when files were pulled from the cloud and when the files were available offline. Obviously, it took a little longer when they were in the cloud.
I had an assortment of picture files and text files in different folders. The folder structure was preserved in the back-up. As far as I can see, robocopy is a definite possibility. That command almost worked. It seems to copy all the non-gsuite files but it can't copy gsuite files.
